STAFF REQUIREMENTS: BRIEFING ON SAFETY EVALUATION, FSAR UPDATES, AND INCORPORATION OF RISK INSIGHTS,2:05 P.M. THURSDAY, JUNE 4,1998, COMMISSIONERS CONFERENCE ROOM, ONE WHITE FLINT NORTH, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE)

The Commission was briefed by representatives of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and the NRC staff on proposed regulatory guidance related to the implementation of 10 CFR 50.71(e) and proposed changes to 10 CFR 50.59. The Commission indicated that it would provide guidance on these issues in addressing the staffs proposed generic letter on interim guidance for updated FSARs, as contained in SECY 98-087, and the staffs evaluation of language proposals concerning 10 CFR 50.59, as contained in COMSECY-98-013. The Commission requested that the staff develop and implement guidelines for fostering greater flexibility in staff interactions with the public on reactor-related issues (e.g., through information exchanges on the NRC web site).
