l AUG 2 81984 Allegation No.: RI-84-A-0055 I

MEMORANDUM FOR: Alan Shropshire, Allegation Office Coordinator THRU:

Richard W. Starostecki, Director, DPRP FROM:

Robert M. Gallo, Chief, Reactor Projects Section 2A,' DPRP l

SUBJECT:

ALLEGATION RI-84-A-0055 (LIMERICK-1) INADEQUATE EXAMINATION /

INSFECTION OF VISIBLE CRACK INSIDE THE "B" RECIRCULATION PUMP SUCTION VALVE l

The subject allegation was received by NRC Region I on April 9, 1984, from an anonymous alleger.

The allegation involves inadequate examination and inspec-l tion of a visible crack inside the "B" recirculation pump suction valve.

Region I notified the licensee, Philadelphia Electric Company (PECo), on May 29, 1984, of the allegation and requested PECo to investigate ~and evaluate the subject of the allegation. PECo inspected the weld in question and, in.a response letter to Region I, dated June 18, 1984, stated that results showed an indication did exist, but it was an acceptable surface irregularity, Prior to PECo's examination of the "B" recirculation. pump suction valve, in-spectors reviewed the radiograph reader sheets and the vendor and receipt docu-ments (see IR 50-352/84-24), Based on further tvaluation of the licensee's findings, Region I concluded that the indication was not a crack, was a con-figuration such that no stress concentration was to be expected, and would not have an adverse effect on the valve's performance (see IR 50-352/84-26 for details).

Region I concurs with the licensee's findings.

Based on the results of these inspections, Region I concludes that the allega-tion is unsubstantiated.

No further action is planned.

This allegation is considered closed.
