PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION November 23, 1976 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-76-201 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
Facility: Three Mile Island Unit 2
Subject:
ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT FIRE AT CONSTRUCTION SITE At about 5:00 p.m. on November 22, 1976, a fire occun ed in the motor control center for the Nuclear Service Closed Cooling Water pump.
The fire was first observed by test personnel in the Unit 2 control room and was extinguished by site personnel. No injuries resulted from the fire. An outside Fire Department was notified.and arrived on site after the fire had been extinguished. The utility has issued a press release.
Media interest is expected because of interest in nuclear plants and three previous fires at this, site in approximately 2 weeks (PNO-76-195). The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been and is being kept informed. An NRC press release is not planned.
NRC, Region I, Philadelphia, Pa. received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 7:25 p.m. on November 22, 1976.
