PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT-PNS 29
_This preligninary notification' constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.
SUBJECT:
ANTINUCLEAR DEMONSTRATIONS SCHEDULED FOR THE WEEKEND OF l
AUGUST 6, 1977 According:to m'edia accounts and other information brought to the attention of the NRC, antinuclear demonstrations are planned at numerous r.uclese facilities throughout the United States during the weekend of August 6 1977. These accounts indicate that the demonstrations are being spons6 red.
and organized by a wide variety of local and regional antinuclear groups who have chosen to time such demonstrations with the anniversary of the Hiroshima Bomb.
Information received thus far indicates that the demon-strations are planned to be along the same lines as those which took place on April 30, 1977 to include the release of helium filled balloons at each site. The NRC has received no credible information that any of the groups involved plan either violent confrontations or attempted take-overs of any licensed nuclear facilities.
Some literature disseminated by certain of the West Coast groups has alluded to "non-violent civil disobedience" but have not specified what this would encompass.

possessed by the NRC. All affected facilities are aware of the possi-bility of demonstrations at their sites and have taken appropriate pre-cautions. No further action is planned.
This PN is being issued to alert the Comission to the possbility of publicity and media interest connected with these planned demonstrations.
