SUMMARY
- FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (FEMA) REGION V 1998 RADIOLOGICAL EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS CONFERENCE On May 27 and 28,1998, the FEMA held its annual radiological emergency preparedness conference at Argonne, Illinois. The meeting was attended by representatives from Federal, State, Native American Tribal, and local governmental organizations involved in radiological emergency preparedness and representatives from nuclear power plant utilities located in Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Region Ill. A list of participants is attached. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange information on new initiatives being undertaking in radiological emergency preparedness and to schedule exercises for the following five years (with emphasis placed on the 1999 exercise schedule). Presentations were made by FEMA, NRC, State and Native American Tribal representatives. The NRC presentation included an overview of the NRC organizations responsible for the review of emergency response programs and for response to actual events, a discussion on emergency preparedness for permanently shutdown nuclear plants, and a discussion on new emergency preparedness initiatives being undertaken at the NRC. A copy of the overheads used in the NRC presentation is attached.

FEMA described efforts undertaking by the Strategic Review Steering Committee and the j
proposed timetable for completing these efforts. State representatives described new initiatives
/
being undertaking in some of the states. Native American Tribal representatives discussed emergency preparedness programs being developed at their Reservations.
