SUBJECT ABSTRACT:
ITISPOSAL OT RUCLEAR WASTE MAR 2 l 1989 Mr. George Strick. land 367 Cope Avenue Akron, Ohio 44319
Dear Mr. Strickland:
I am in receipt of your letter to Governor Celeste and the response.to you by Richard L. Shank, Director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, concerning disposal of nuclear waste. Mr. Shank forwarded these documents to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), which is the Federal agency responsible for regulating the safe possession and use of nuclear material, including the safe disposal of radioactive waste.
I have been asked to respond to your concerns for the NRC.
Contrary to what you have been told, spent fuel from. nuclear generating stations in the United States is not exported to South Africa or to any other country for disposal.
Spent nuclear. fuel is currently stored at the nuclear reactors where it was used to generate electricity, pending development of a Federal disposal facility in the United States. The U.S. Department of Energy (DGE) is responsible for developing the disposal facility, and has signed contracts with all the utilities operating nuclear generating stations to take l
title to the spent fuel in 1998.
DOE is currently investigating a site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada to determine if it~is suitable for a disposal site.
{
Low-Level radioactive wastes (LLW) are currently disposed of at three 3
state-licensed disposal sites in South Carolina, Nevada and Washington.
Currently, most of the LLW from your home-state of Ohio is shi) ped to the site at Barnwell, South Carolina for disposal.
Investigations are )eing conducted i
to establish a new site in the State of Michigan for use by Ohio and several l
other Midwestern states.
In summary, disposal of radioactive waste from the United States is being provided for in this country, and wastes are not being disposed of in South Africa.
I hope this information addresses your concerns.
Sincerely, j
