Dear Sirs:
It has been more than eight years since the accident at TMI-2 and our delegation is concerned that the remainder of the cleanup proceed as expeditiously as safety will permit.
We understand that on July 31, 1986, GPU Nuclear provided a recommenda-tion to the Commission to dispose of 2.1 million gallons of processed TMI-2 water by evaporation.
As you are aware, GPU Nuclear specifically decided not to recommend discharging the water into the Susquehanna River.
This decision recognizes the public concern and opposition to river disposal in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
From the beginning there has been widespread agreement that this water should not be stored indefinitely on Three Mile Island.
GPU Nuclear has recognized the political and public sensitivities to dispocing of the processed water.
We are aware that a draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) evaluated GPU Nuclear's proposal for evaporation and several other alternatives for their potential environmental impact and found them acceptable according to federal and state requirements.
The TMI-2 Advi-sory Panel, by a 10-2 vote on April 6, 1987, found the draft PEIS was an acceptable document.
We consider the recommendation for evaporation to be a reasonable proposal provided that it is technically feasible and environmentally safe.
We understand that Commission approval of any disposition alternative is required.
It is, therefore, our sincere desire that the Commission proceed as expeditious]y as possible on approval of GPU Nuclear's recommendation.in order to prepare for disposal of the processed water if it is technically feasible and environmentally safe.
Sincerely, A
