DAILY HIGHLIGHT - VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION LICENSING APPEAL BOARD ELIMINATES TWO CONTENTIONS FOR SPENT FUEL P0OL EXPANSION HEARING On July 21, 1987 the Licensing Appeal Board affinned the Licensing Board's admission of contention 1, but reversed its admission of contentions 2 and 3 for the Vermont Yankee spent fuel pool expansion hearing. The licensing board had previously admitted the following contentions (condensed):
1.
The proposed spent fuel pool cooling method has not been shown to be single failure proof.
2.
Increased severe accident risk requires an environmental statement.
3.
The applicant hasn't adequately discussed alternatives (specifically dry cask storage and independent pool storage).
The only remaining contention is now contention 1.
Because this action leaves the State of Massachusetts without one admissible contention, Massachusetts has been dismissed as an intervenor but is authorized to participate as an interested state.
