Docket 50-294,- License R-114, Annual Report,1988 R

-Gentlemen:

Pursuant to Section 6.7.2' of the' above license, 'the' following information is hereby submitted:

a. During 1988, the MSU reactor was not' operated. 'There were no changes in= _

the facility design, characteristics or procedures related to safety.

The Technical Specification required tests'were conducted as necessary.

b. There were zero hours of operation and zero energy produced.
c. There were no emergency shutdowns and no inadvertent scrams.
d. Maintenance was performed on the regulating 'and shim control rod drives to remedy an electrical short in the electromagnet lead wires. The drives were tested and verified to be operational following that activity.

-:l

e. There were no facility changes carried out pursuant to 50.59 of 10 CFR Part-50.

)

f. There were no liquid releases from the facility during the year.

(a) The total gaseous release for the year was measured to beless than' 'l 0.001.microcuries.

'(b) There was no Argon'41 released.

~

(c) The Argon-41 concentration 1was zero. .

-(d)LThe particulate release is estimated.(on the basis of'a continuously ~

operating' monitor) to be less than 0.001 microcuries. This is believed due to natural radioactivity rather than-to.the reactor.

l (e) The average concentration of particulate released was.less than-10~I4 microcuries per cc.

(f) There were no'other radionuclides in th'e gaseous d'ischarge.

.(g) The maximum radiation exposure received by an employee was 20 mrems whole body and 30 mrems hand. These-were experienced'during fuel inventory testing. No visitors received-a measurable exposure. :The average exposure-to employees'was estimated to be less than 10 2

mrem /yr.

(h) Radiation surveys showed no measurable radiation.or radioactivity levels in the working areas except when required testing was being conducted (e.g. SNM inventory, control rod inspection, etc.).

(i) MSU does TLD (gross beta) monitoring and environmental (river, sewer) sampling on a routine basis.

Sincerely, 1
