' DECEMBER 20, 1988, RE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING CONTAMINATION LIMIT 3j Background.

j During-a routine Region.V inspection of the ANF facility,.the licensee was l

found.in violation of a license condition that limits alpha. contamination on cloth protective clothing which is to be reused.

-In' response to the-violation, ANF~ submitted the subject application'to revise the alpha contamination limit.

a Discussion-q Under the' existing license, cloth protective clothigg can be' reused if the

. alpha contamination does not exceed'1000 dpm/100 cm. However, this limit'does not differentiate removable and fixed contamination. -ANF has stated that the limit was: intended for: removable contamination and proposed a_ revision that will.

tion does not exceed 1000 dpm/100 cm. The licensee contends that limiting the:

. removable contamination on protective clothing will avoid resuspension and-personnel contamination.

NRC's Regulatory. Guide 8.24, " Health Physics Surveys During Enriched granium-235 Processing and Fuel Fabrication," provides a limit of 1000 dpm/100.cm for

' removable surface contamination (al aha activity) on protective clothing. The limit proposed by ANF conforms to tie NRC guidance. ~

Findings / Recommendation.

Staff-finds that the proposed revision is acceptable and does not adversely affect public health and safety or the environment.

Staff recommends that the application be. approved.

The Region V Principal Inspector has no objection to this proposed action.
