' NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION -

S WASHINGTON, D.C. 20586 CHAIRMAN.
February 16, 1989 The Honorable Eva'n Bayh, III
. Governor of Indiana
-Indianapolis, Indiana 46204
Dear Governor Bayh:
As you. assume the Office of Governor of Indiana,LI look. forward to i
working with you to fulfill the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) responsibilities in regulating nuclear facilities ~and materials to protect the public' health and safety.
In:1976, the NRC adopted a recommendation of State organizations, including the' National Governors Association, that we request each State to appoint a single person to act as liaison to NRC to. improve-Federal / State cooperation. The NRC looks' to the Governor-appointed State-
'.iaison' Officers to provide a communication channel between the States-and the NRC;-to be the key person in the State to keep the Governor completely informed on regulatory health and safety matters as appropriate to. their-interests and responsibilities; and to provide NRC with answers to questions posed. to the States on ' appropriate issues.
I want to encourage Indiana's continued participation in the NRC's State Liaison 0fficer program. The individual you select for this role may be someone from your staff who can communicate effectively with other State agencies on nuclear issues.
Former Governor Robert Orr appointed Dr. T. S. Danielson Jr... Assistant Commissioner for Health Maintenance, Board of Health, as the most recent Indiana State' Liaison Officer. The NRC will continue to work with Dr. Danielson unless you inform us of a new choice.. We will keep you
. informed of major NRC programs and activities through your appointee.
Also, we will continue to maintain our ties to those State agencies with.
whom we have established relationships for specific issues.
If you or your staff have any questions or wish additional infomation, please contact Carlton Kammerer, Director of State, Local and Indian Tribe Programs, Office of Governmental and Public Affairs, at 301/492-0321, or James Foster, our Regional' State Liaison Officer, at 312/790-5666.
Thank.you for your cooperation on this matter.
I look forward to continuing an excellent working relationship with the State of Indiana.
Sincerely, A
N-E.
