SPENT FUEL P00L RACK DESIGN Gentlemen:
As a result of a July 15, 1987 telecon with members of your staff, Georgia Power Company provides the following responses to the Questions on Spent Fuel Racks for Vogtle Unit 1:
- 1) The fuel supplier (Westinghouse) has verified that the impact load on a fuel assembly of 3 g's is acceptable. The actual maximum test load is 20 g's.
This data to support this number is contained in internal Westinghouse WCAP's 8286 and 9895.
These WCAP's have not been submitted to the NRC for review but as all fuel design information are available at the Westinghouse location for review.
- 2) The grid damping value of 25% was developed from data presented in the approved WCAP 9401-P-A.
Pages 3-26 to 3-31 explain the derivation of the grid damping value.
Further explanation is contained in the response to NRC Question 13 in the WCAP supplement.
Although the 25% critical damping value is not explicitly called out in the WCAP, the data to support this value is.
