KRC TMI-2 CLEANUP PROJECT DIRECTORATE WEEKLY STATUS REPORT FOR JULY 13 - 19, 1987 1.

DEFUELING j

i Pick and place defueling of partial length fuel assemblies and fuel pins continued. Partial fuel assemblies E-3, F-2. F-3, F-4, G-3, 6-4, and G-5 were loaded into defueling canisters. A total of 52 I

fuel assemblies out of 177 in the core have now been broken free from the lower grid and loaded into canisters.

Four canisters were filled and one partially filled.

None of the filled canisters were transferred to the spent fuel pool.

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING l

1 US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sample analysis results shew that TMI site liquid effluents are in accordance with regulatory limits, NRC requirements, and the City of Lancaster i

Agreement.

TMI intake water and water effluents from the station (Units 1 and

2) discharge are enalyzed by EPA.

Gauna spectrum analyses of the seven daily composited samples for June 27 - July 4, 1987 indicated L

no reactor related activity.

EPA's gar.na spectrum analysis of the NRC's TMI outdoor air sample for Ju!y 9 - 16, 1987 showed no reactor related radioactivity.

The water works for the City of Lancaster composited seven daily samples from June 28 - July 4, 1987.

EPA's gasna spectrum analysis of the composite sample showed no reactor related radioactivity.

Robotic scabbling of flour areas in the seal injection valve room (SIVd) on the 281' elevation of the cu4iliary building has resumed.

About one third of the total floor sur face bas been scabbled.

Floor scubbling continues in the north and sauth valve alleys on the 261' elevation of the fuel handling building.

WUREG-0663, dealing with disposal of accident-generatea water was issued en June 30, 1987.

In Supplement 2, the scaff concluded that GPU Nuclear, l

Inc. 's proposal to dispose of the water by f orced evaporatica to the etssphere, f ollowed by onsite solidification of the racaining solids, and disposal in a licensed low-level waste disposal facility is an acceptoble plan and will recomend to the Cuamission that it be approved.

relative to the risk from radiation exposure to workers and to tne general public, the probability una consequences of accidents, the coastitment of resources (including costs) and regulatory constraints.

The staf f concluded that no alternative was clearly preferable to the GPU Nuclear, Inc. proposal.

An opportunity for a price hearing on the staff's proposal to lif t the prohibition on the disposal of the contaminated water is being of fered to GPU Nuclear Corporation and to other persons whose interest may be affected.

Requirements for filing a petition for leave to intervene in any proce-ding will be contained in a notice being prephred for publication in the Federal Register.
