Dear Mr. Grimsley:

This request is mad'e pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 522, as amended. UNION ASSOCIATES submits this request to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to obtain documents regarding the following" ROUTINE SAFETY INSPECTIONS OF THE SCREENWELL HOUSE ROOMS AT THE LONG ISLAND LIGHTING COMPANY'S (LILCO) SHOREHAM NUCLEAR PLANT CONDUCTED BETWEEN APRIL 5 - 16, 1983 BY MR. H. l NICHOLAS OF THE NRC. THIS REQUEST RELATES TO INSPECTION NO.

50-322/83-11. j In your response, the NRC should consider " documents" to mean any and all forms of written connunication, including internal J NRC staff memoranda. Your response should also include, but not be l limited to, the following:

reports, studies, plans, graphs, charts, diagrams, memoranda, correspondence, test results, working papers, meeting notes and minutes, computer records and print-outs, notes and summaries of conversations i and interviews.

1. Any LILCO or Stone & Webster personnel who accompanied the NRC representative on the inspection tour.
2. Purpose of this inspection.
3. Notes, both formal and informal, taken by participants during this inspection.
4. Reports or follow-up correspondence prepared by the NRC following this inspection.
5. Follow-up documents filed by LILCO following this inspection.

6. Documents indicating NRC findings which may have prompted this inspection.
7. Documents filed by LILCO with NRC following this inspection which indicated compliance by LILCO of any i problems found during this inspection or any' problems of f other areas which may not have been inspected but which {

had been part of a previous NRC inpsection and which j this inspection was a " random sampling" of-findings from  !

the previous inspection.

In your response, please identify which documents correspond to each request itemized above. If any of the material covered by this request has been destroyed and/or removed, please provide all surrounding documentation, including but not limited to a description of the action (s) taken, relevant date(s) and justification (s) for the action (s).

For any documents or portions of documents you deny due to a specific FOIA exemption, please provide an index itemizing and describing the documents withheld. Pursuant to Vaugh v. Rosen (I),

484 F.2d 280 (D.C. Cir. 1973), cert. denied, 415 U.S. 977 (1974),

the index is reqaired to provide a detailed justification of your grounds for claiming each exemption and an explanation of why each exemption is relevant to the document or portion of the document withheld.
