Dear Mr. DeAnni:

Our organization, with membership throughout Minnesota, has been

)

involved in monitoring progression and status of the proposed fuel rod consolidation project at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant. To this end we have held a public hearing and distributed information to the public about the proposed project. Our main concern has been and is for the safety and health of the nuclear power plant workers J

f and their adjacent neighbors.

All of our recent information seems to indicate that Nort.hern States l

Power Company will be given the go-ahead by the Nuclear Regulatory Comm-i ission to do the 50-59 Self-Review. As you are aware, none of the Minn-l esota agencies have regulatory control over the safety issues of nuclear i

power plants.

The NRC has this responsibility nation-wide.

1 We therefore request that the regulatory agency in charge of nuclear safety, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, submit to our organization a urit.t.en statement, giving t. heir formal approval of t,he proposed fuel

)

rod consolidation pilot project at Northern States Power's Prairie l

Island Nuclear Power Plant. The Minnesota Institute of Concern for l

Public Health can then relay this news to people throughout Minnesota

.who have expressed their concern about the potential safety and health issues involved with this experiment.

Please send a copy of your formal approval to the above address.
