David W. Cockfield Vice President, Nuclear February 28, 1989' Trojan Nuclear Plant Docket 50-344 License NPF-1 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn: Document Control Desk Washington DC 20555
Dear Sirs:
Information on Pressurizer Surge Line Elbow Destructive Examination During June 1988, Portland General Electric Company (PGE) replaced a pressurizer surge line elbow and attached short lengths of pipe because nondestructive test (NDT) indications had been interpreted as flaws at the pipe-to-elbow wolds.
Subsequent destructive examination by Westinghouse's Metallurgical and Nondestructive Examination (NDE) Analysis group showed that no flaws were present, and that other features were the source of the NDT indications.
The enclosed Westinghouse technical reports (WCAP-11986 and WCAP-12092) are provided for your information. They explain in detail the metallurgical and ultrasonic investigations performed under laboratory conditions.
We would be pleased to discuss any questions or comments you may have regarding this information.
r" Sincerely, 8903090105 890220 DR ADDCK 0500 44[
