ULNRC-19 23 DOCKET NUMBER 50-483 CALLAWAY PLANT REACTOR VESSEL STUD REMOVAL
Reference:
ULNRC-1663 dated October 29, 1987 Union Electric has committed in the referenced letter to remove all reactor vessel head closure studs during Refuel III.
This includes 5 studs which we were unable to remove during Refuel II.
As part of the engineering evaluation associated with operation of the plant during Cycle 3, we described the protection provided for the stuck studs during Refuel II, to prevent boric acid exposure and rust formation.
Union Electric will not be using this technique to protect the stuck studs during defueling operations for Refuel III.
The dose received during installation of protective covers for Refuel II was approximately 1 to 1 1/2 man-rem.
The stuck studs do not need to be protected since they will be removed and replaced with new studs.
We do not expect any detrimental effect to the stud holes due to the short duration of exposure and the low temperature of the reactor coolant during defueling operations.
In addition the stud holes will be inspected as part of the stud removal process and any damage will be detected and repaired.
Based on the above, we do not plan to protect the stuck studs during defueling operations.
The open stud holes will be protected during defueling and once the stuck studs are removed, all stud holes will be protected during refueling.
