February 27, 1989 MEMORANDUM FOR: Carl H. Berlinger, Chief Generic Communications Branch Division of Operational Events Assessment, NRR FROM:

Theodore S. Michaels, Project Manager Standardization and Non-Power Reactor Project Directorate Division of Reactor Projects - III, IV, V and Special Projects, NRR

SUBJECT:

GENERAL ATOMICS INFORMATION MEMORANDUM ON CONTROL R00 DRIVE SWITCHES The ' enclosed memorandum to "All TRIGA Research Reactor Facilities" from General Atomics, manufacturer of the TRIGA research reactors, discusses the preventive maintenance that should be performed to avoid sluggish or sticking behavior of the control rod drive switches. The information memorandum was

- developed because one of the "up" switches at Reed College stuck, and the control rod kept withdrawing, as described in the memorandum.

The problem has apparently occurred at other TRIGA reactors and therefore is generic.

It, however, does not affect the safety circuitry of the console since power and fuel temperature scrams are unaffected by the switches.

Also enclosed, for your information, is a description of the event at Reed College.
