Dear Sirs:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (TMI-2)

Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 Auxiliary and Fuel Handling Building Quarterly Decontamination Schedule In response to the NRC letter dated March 7, 1984, the following is the status of Auxiliary and Fuel Handling Building Decontamination for the Second Quarter of 1987. This update addresses only those areas where Technical Specification Surveillance are not being performed due to ALARA considerations.

Make-up Filter Cubicle (AX117)

ALARA exemption is being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3775.02 (4331-R3), " Fire Barrier Penetration Fre Seal Inspection."

Recent radiological surveys show general area dose rates i.f 600 to 3000 mrem /hr, with contact readings as high as 5.5 Rem /hr.

The status of this cubicle is essentially unchanged witn flushing of the Make-up and Purification System (MU&P) in progress. Anticipated future evolutions of this task will require the use of system filters located in this cubicle. Radiological conditions can be expected to remain variable until system flushing is completed. Major reductions in radiation readings will not occur until both flushing and gross decontamination are complete.

Seal Injection Cubicle-(AX004).

ALARA' exemption is currently being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance.4210-SUR-3244.01-(4301-M8), " Containment Integrity Verification."

General ^ area dose rates in the cubicle proper range from 1 R/hr - 56 R/hr, with contact readings:as high as 140 R/hr.

Floor scabbling progressed slowly during this quarter, primarily due to delays

/ caused by airborne contamination problems..These problems have been resolved-and progress is expected to resume soon. The surface' decontamination program "is expected to extend through the Fourth Quarter of 1987.

Make-up Pump Suction (FH001) and Discharge Valve Alley (FH003~ a & b)

'ALARA exemption is being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3775.02 (4331-R3) and 4210-SUR-3775.01 (4331-A1), " Fire Barrier Penetration Fire Seal Inspections."

The general area dose-rates for the Make-up Pump Suction' Alley (FH001)' range from 25 - 100 mR/hr, with hot spots up to 1.4 R/hr. For the Discharge Valve Alley, the general area dose rates in FH003a range from 50-600 mR/hr with hot.

spots of'.'3 R/hr. In FH0030, general area dose rates are 20-2000 mR/hr with shot spots of 30 R/hr.

MU&P system flushing operations continued during the past quarter.. Radiation l

-levels continue.to be influenced by MU&P system flushing and by surface contamination levels. Scabbling has been completed in FH003a, and is.in progress in FH003b. 'Scabbling in FH001 will follow, with completion scheduled during for the Third Quarter of 1987.

Sincerely, 0
