Dear Mr. Lewis:
I am responding to your note of December 31, 1988 requesting an extension for the public comment period on the Advance Notice of Proposed Policy Statement on Exemptions from Regulatory Control.
On December 5, the staff submitted a revised schedule to the Commission for the development of its proposed exemption policy.
This new schedule calls for the submission to the Commission of a staff-generated proposed policy statement on April 28, 1989. To meet this date, the staffs' evaluation of all comments must be finalized by early April 1989.
This evaluation would include consideration of the comments received from the Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW).
These comments are currently scheduled for receipt in late March. Therefore, any public comments received before this March date would be expected to receive serious consideration.
The Commission will also publish for public consent any proposed policy, thereby affording a further opportunity for public interaction.
