Mr. Jose A. Calvo, Director Project Director, Region IV Division of Reactor Projects III, IV, V and Special Projects
SUBJECT:
Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 License No. DPR-51 Engineering Evaluation to Addrest HPI Backflow Event
Dear Mr. Calvo:
Attached is a summary of our engineering evaluation performed to address the ANO-1 High Pressure Injection System backflow event which occurred on January 20, 1989.
The summary includes a description of the event, an assessment of damage to the affected loop, and our action to prevent reoccurrence.
AP&L has taken action to identify and to replace those components potentially adversely affected by this event.
Additionally, modifications are being implemented to prevent reoccurrence.
The modifications associated with the backflow event as well as additional modifications necessary to qualify the HPI piping for all other anticipated operational modes are scheduled to be complete by March 7,1989.
Upon completion of these modifications, the unit will be ready to resume power operation.
We, therefore, request the NRC Staff's expeditious review of the attached.
AP&L is prepared to meet with the NRC Staff at your earliest convenience should further clarification of our assessment or corrective action be necessary.
Very truly yours, 1
