NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Mail Station Pl-137 Washington, D.C.

20555 Gentlemen:

DOCKET NUMBERS 50-266 AND 50-301 ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION PROGRAM FOR REGULATORY GUIDE 1.97 INSTRUMENTS POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 In a letter to you dated August 9, 1988 (Ref. VPNPD-88-411/

NRC-88-073), we notified you that we had completed our environmental qualification program with the exception of our Gamma-Metrics Neutron Flux Monitors.

It was stated in our letter that solder joints at certain cable assembly connections for thes?

monitors may be defective, allowing moisture into the cable and potentially causing degradation or failure of the neutron flux monitors under accident conditions.

At the time the letter was written we were working with Gamma-Metrics to obtain additional information to qualify our system.

The original schedule was to resolve this issue during the upcoming refueling outage for each i

unit.

We anticipated that Gamma-Metrics would complete and qualify their testing procedure, hardware fix kit, and installation procedures in the fall of 1988.

Gamma-Metrics has still not made these items available.

The confirmation of the environmental qualification of our neutron flux monitors is now delayed until the first refueling outage for each Point Beach unit after Gamm'a-Metrics provides the qualified items to us.

Gamma-Metrics has told us that the

. qualified kits should be available for our fall 1989 outage.
