SUMMARY

FOR NRC/BECHTEL/GPU MEETING ON INFORMATION NOTICE 88-35 On February 8,1989, NRC management and staff met with Bechtel and General Public Utility (GPU) representatives to discuss the portrayal of Bechtel's and GPU's auditing of Nuclear Energy Services (NES) in Information Notice i

88-35, " Inadequate Licensee Performed Vendor Audits." The time of the meeting was changed from 2:00 pm to 12:30 pm the morning of February 8, 1989. The change was made to accommodate a last minute change to the schedule of the Director, NRR whose presence was requested by Bechtel. Bechtel presented information concerning the extent of their audits of NES, the audit findings, nonconformance reports issued, and corrective action requested of NES and taken by Bechtel. After discussion of the NRC inspection findings and Bechtel audit and inspection findings, it was determined that Bechtel's primary concern was the characterization of Bechtel's oversight of NES in the information notice.

It was then agreed that Bechtel would submit a letter to the NRC staff that described, for the record, their concern that the information notice had not accurately characterized their oversight of NES.
