{j,w MEMORANDUM FOR:- William Axelson, Chief N7!

Nuclear Materials Safety and Safeguards Branch, Region III FROM: Ronald R. Bellamy, Chief Emergency Preparedness and Radiological Protection Branch, Region I

SUBJECT:

TLD RESULTS FROM THE TOPAZ GEMSTONES We have analyzed the TLDs that you returned to us that were exposed to the ,

Topaz, gemstones. All the results are listed on the attached tables. Each of '

the three groups of gemstone exposures has a control exposure associated with it. The control represents exposure in transit as well as background. The l control exposures have not been subtracted from the gemstone exposures 11sted in the tables. We have also established the total uncertainty cf the results to be about 15%.

l The results indicate that there was generally no measureable radiation exposure frorr the gemstones within the uncertainty limits of this measurement -

system. However, the TLD elements listed below do have a slightly elevated dose that'is probably significant. Because these measurements are at the threshold of the limits of this measurement system, it is not possible tc further quantify the results or their uncertainty.

Group 3 Badge No. 633 E-3 I Badge No. 765 E-3 l We have also enclosed for your information Attachments 1 and 2 giving you an explantion of the configurations of the TLDs used for the topaz gemstones.

I hope this is of use to you. l n l hM) k , n Ronald R. Bellamy, Chief 4 Emergency Preparedness and Radiolog dal Protection Branch FoIA-B M m I 8710050389 870930 PDR FOIA EDWARDS87-500 PDR k({ .
