TN-TRU CASK Attendees TN NRC E V. Margotta W. H. Lee Alan S.11anson D. T. Huang Tara Neider R. H. Odegaarden Introduction A meeting was held at the request of Transnuclear, Inc. (TN) at Silver Spring, Maryland, on September 23, 1987, concerning the design for a package to transport contact-handled transuranic wastes (TRU).
i Discussion A general description of the package is given in a memorandum for the Files (R. H. Odegaarden) dated August 6,1987.
TN discussed design changes to the impact limiters. Thesechanges-(e.g.,
square to round, all radial wood orientations, change attachment from lid to flange, etc.) are meant to simplify the analysis and drop tests necessary to demonstrate the package meets the requirements of 10 CFR Part 71.
l TN will conduct tension and shear testing on balsa wood glue joints'to demonstrate the joints are as strong as the wood.
1 In addition to the 1/3 scale puncture tests TN will conduct 1/2 scale static impact limiter tests (side, end, and CG over the cover) at 125% of the load to be applied to the actual package when subjected to the drop tests specified in Part 71. Force / deflection curves will be developed from the test results.
Also, TN will conduct dynamic 1/2 scale impact limiter tests (end drop, side drop, slap-down, and CG over the cover).

An additional static puncture test was conducted on the flange (1/3 scale model ).
The results appear favorable to the package design.
TN plans an additional meeting mid to end - November 1987 after completion of the dynamic 1/2 scale model tests.
An SAR for the package design is expected to be submitted before the end of the year.
