Nuclear Regulatory Commission 611 Ryan Plaza Drive, Suite 1000 Arlington, Texas 76011 South Texas Project Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Unit 1 Power Ascension Testing IkoustonLighting&PowerCompany(HL&P)estimatesthattheSouthTexas Project Electric Generating Station Unit 1 will complete power ascension testing at the 50% plateau during the last week of October 1987 (based on fuel loading beginning on or about 30 June 1987). At that time, HL&P will conduct a thorough review of the adequacy of plant hardware and operating staff performance prior to ascension to the next power plateau of 75% .

HL&P would welcome an opportunity to review our performance with your staff prior to power ascension above 50% power to provide for NRC input to the assessment. We believe this review should take place on site to better access whatever information may be required to complete the assessment.

We will keep your Resident Inspection Office aware of our progress and plans for conducting the power ascension assessment.
