Gentlemen:

'Thank you for ycur. letter dated August 17, 1987, in response to our July 240 b

1987 letter concerning our receipt of an allegation pertaining to activ o

conducted under 10 CFR 40.13 at your facility.

c, Our letter requested that you investigate the facts concerning an allegat@n 60 that Region III received which involved the possible sanding and grinding of t

depleted uranium counterweights. Your letter described the results of'34Rir investigation of the allegation; specifically, you made the following findings:

1.-

Of the individuals you interviewed, none are aware of any instance where depleted uranium counterweights were drilled, ground or sanded.

2.

During your reviews, one employee informed you that he had contacted us in this matter. The employee informed you that twenty years ago the counterweights of the "Convair" 880's were cut up; however, your contact with the Convair Division confirmed that the counterweights for the Convair 880 were made of sintered tungsten and not depleted uranium.

3.

Your radiation surveys of your facility revealed no levels above background.

From the information presented in your August 17, 1987 letter (enclosed),it appears that counterweights may have been machined.

However, those counterweights were made from sintered tungsten, a material which is not regulated by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Conmission.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely, 1
