As a result of several design changes, and in response to Ref. 2, we j
have revised the submittal cited as Ref. 1 above.
The changes to the j
submittal are as follows:
1)
We have revised page 1-2 of Part I to specify raw fuel as the only authorised material in Building L 2)
We have revised pages 3-34a, 8.2-11, and 8.3-4 of Part I to describe several design changes and additional equipment items.
3)
Page 3-34b is revised to specify that certain containers are steel.
4)
Pages 3.60-1 and 3.60-2 of Part II are changed to provide additional information on fuel handling 5)
The layout of "L" Building has been revised to s'aow the location of criticality alarm detectors, and to reflect rainor changes in the layout.
6)
We have revised Pages 3.61-1 and 3.61-2, and added page 3.61-la of Part II to provide additional details regarding process controls, and to reflect design changes in the operation.

UNC NAVAL PRODUCTS LICENSE SNM-368 Part I Page 1-2 Docket No.70-371 Chapter 1 Rev. 4 Date: 2/10/89 1.2 RITE AND FACILITIES 1.2.1 The site The 251 acre UNC site is located in the northeast corner of the town of Montville.
It is bounded on the east by the Thames River, on the north by Trading Cove, and on the west and south by privately owned land.-
The nearest site boundary is to the north, at a distance of about 650 feet from the affluent stacks.
The nearest residence is about 1400 feet to the west.
There are about 300 people living to the west and south within a half mile of the plant.
The total population of Montville in 1980 was 16,500.
The city of Norwich, which lies to the north of the site, had a population of about 38,000 in 1980.
The most densely populated area of the city is about two to three miles from the plant.
The nearest occupied buildings in Norwich are about'2200 feet'from the plant.- The city of New London, with a 1980 population of about 28,600, is about 10 t
miles to the south.
a The distance from the plant site to the east shore of the Thames River I
is about 3300 feet.
The area within's one mile' radius of the pisnt site includes woodlands, residences, light businesses, a few chicken farms, and two hospitals.
Fort Shantock, a 183 acre State Park, is located about one mile to the south.'"#'-
