1 NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No.

50-266 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 1

~Date July 3, 1987 Completed By C.

W. Krause Telephone 414/221-2001 1

Unit'1 commenced the period at 20% power in a post refueling condition to acclimate the turbine for overspeed testing.

On June 1 at 0103 hours0.00119 days
0.0286 hours
1.703042e-4 weeks
3.91915e-5 months
, the generator was taken off line to conduct overspeed tests and it was returned to service 25 minutes later.

The unit was administratively restricted to 38% power for the I

next two days while operations improved the secondary' system water chemistry.

Power was ramped to 88% (approximately 435 MWe) to condition the nuclear fuel for another two days.

The unit achieved post-outage full power, approximately 495 MWe, for the first time on June 7.

It continued at that power level to the end of.the period.

On' June 19, an Unusual Event was declared when 160 gallons of radioactive coolant from the Unit 1 letdown system was released to Lake Michigan via the Unit 2 service water system.

Although-initial quantifications of the radioactivity released indicated that radioactive release limits were exceeded, it was determined from subsequent sampling that the actual radioactive release only amounted to about 3% of the release limit.

Investigations are underway to determine the causes for the improper valve lineup which initiated the event.

On June 24, 3D emergency diesel failed to start during a bimonthly test when operators failed to " valve in" starting air, after checking the engine turnover.

The diesel started successfully after the air valve was opened.

Maintenance completed during the period included repairs to "B"

main feedwater regulating valve controller.
