Fire penetration Seals and Structural Steel Fireproofing Work NRC Docket No. 50-456 Reference (a): June 10, 1987 S.C. Hunsader letter to T.E. Murley (b): June 18,198'i S.C. Hunsader letter to T.E. Murley
Dear Mr. Murley:
1 In references (a) and (b) we provided the schedule for completion of j
those fire penetration seals and portions of the structural steel fireproofing for which construction had not been completed. We also reported that we had instituted roving fire watches as a compensatory measure. We committed to maintain the fire watches in place until work on these aspects i
of the fire protection system had been completed. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with an update on the schedule of that work completion.
In June, we expected this work to be completed by August 31, 1987.
A more recent review of the remaining work indicates that it will take longer than initially anticipated for this work to be completed. The delay is primarily due to the tightly congested work spaces in which the remaining work is located. This delay has occurred in spite of our good faith efforts to complete this work as stated. The completion of work to date has included substantial craft overtime hours.
At this time, only twelve (12) penetration fire seals remain to be installed. Of these, eight (8) will be completed by Sept ember 25, 1987. The remaining four (4) will be completed prior to the end of the Braidwood Unit 1 surveillance outage which is currently expected to be corapleted by December 8, 1987.

For two (2) of these four (4) penetrations, an equipment out-of-service is required in order to install the seal.
In one case, the equipment is the Unit 1 480V Auxiliary Building Unit Substation 134X 1AP16E.
l The other cas,e involves fan OVCO2CA. Both pieces of equipment are required
.to be operational while Unit 1 operates. A third penetration contains a number of cables that exceed the Quality control acceptance criteria for j
installation in an ordinary fire seal. A re-design involving extension of a cable tray to the concrete interface is currently underway. The fourth penetration contains a number of temporary power cables routed to Braidwood Unit 2 to support testing activities.
Currently, less than 3000 square feet of structural steel fireproofing remains to be installed. A detailed breakdown of this remaining 4
work is provided in Attachment A.
We expect that all this work will be completed by September 25, 1987, with the exceptian of that work required in Area 7 (the Diesel Generator vent shaft). An equipment out-of-service is required to complete this work which will also occur during the surveillance l
outage. This remaining work will, thus, be completed by December 8, 1987.
1 We will continue to maintain the roving firewatches in accordance with Station Administrative Procedures as compensatory measures until such time as all construction on the fire protection nystems is complete. These measures will adequately compensate for the unexpected delays in completing the remaining construction on the fire protectica systems.
This is being submitted for NRC review. Please address any questions concerning this matter to this office.
Very truly yours,
