Subject:

Braidwood Station Unit 1 Fire protection program Fire penetration Seals and Structural Steel Fireproofing Work NRC Docket No. 50-t,54

Reference:

(a) NUREG - 1002, Safety Evaluation Report, supplement 2, dated October, 1986

Dear Mr. Murley:

Section 9.5.1.5 of reference (a) provided a listing of Fire protection program items that required completion which included the following:

1.

The installation of penetration seals in fire walls and fire-rated floor / ceiling assemblies are to be completed before exceeding 5% of rated power.

2.

The installation of fireproofing for steel structural elements is to be completed before exceeding 5% of rated power.

I The purpose of this letter is to inform you that small portions of the above work will not be completed prior to exceeding 5% of rated power, currently expected for July 1, 1987.

i For the penetration seals in fire walls we anticipate that 42 (less l

than 1%) of electrical penetrations will not be sealed at 5% power. The penetrations are located in various areas of the auxiliary building and installation will not be completed because applicable Unit 2 cable installation will not be finalized at that time. However, current work activities will allow these to be completed by August 1, 1987. Roving fire watches have already been instituted as a compensatory measure for the areas affected by these penetration seals to provide the necessary fire protection j

measures.

4 Mr. T.E. Murley June.10, 1987 s-Rework of structural steel fireproofing has been necessary to facilitate completion of construction. As such, the following structural steel:at the indicated locations will not be fireproofed prior to 5% power:

a)

Upper and Lower Cable Spreading Rooms.

(currently 35% complete) b)

HVAC Equip. Room at'elev. 426' in the Aux. Bldg.

c)

Aux Bldg. elev. 426'.in corridor at 12-26, M-Q.

Workload and space. constraints dealing with Unit 1 electrical hanger construction have prevented the completion of this fireproofing work. Now that access is available the fireproofing in Unit 1 can be completed and this'is expected by August 31, 1987. Again, roving fire watches have already been instituted as a compensatory measure for these areas to provide the necessary fire protection measures.

l For both cases, fire watches shall remain in effect as required by the Station' Administrative Procedures until the above installation work is completed. This is consistent with the requirements noted in reference (a).

Please address any questions concerning this matter to this office.

Very truly yours, L
