Dear Mr. Grimsley:

This request is made pursuant to the Freedom of Infor-mation Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 522, as amended. UNION ASSOCIATES submits this request to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to obtain documents regarding the following:

ALL DOCUMENTS FILED BY LONG ISLAND LIGHTING COMPANY (LILCO) REGARDING CATEGORY II, SEISMIC I, SAFETY RELATED COMPONENTS AND STRUCTURES AT THE SHOREHAM NUCLEAR FACILITY BETWEEN JANUARY 15 AND JUNE 30, 1983 In your response, the NRC should consider " documents" to mean any and all forms of written communication, including internal NRC staff memoranda. Your response should also include, but not be limited to, the following:

reports, studies, plans, graphs, charts, diagrams, memoranda, correspondence, test results, working papers, meeting notes and minutes, computer records and print-outs, notes and summaries of conversations and interviews.

These documents are specifically requested from, but not limited to, the following offices of the NRC:

UNION ASSOCIATES requests the NRC to provide all documents prepared or utilized by, 'n the possession of, or routed through the NRC containing any and all information related to the following.

1. Documents prepared by LILCO between January 15, 1983 and June 30, 1983 and filed with the NRC regarding Category II, Seismic I, Components and Structures Related to Safety at the Shoreham Nuclear Plant. This should include, but not be limited to, letters and official reports.

2. Documents prepared by Stone & Webster Engineering Corp. for LILCO and filed with the NRC by LILCO between January 15, 1983 and June 30, 1983 relating to Category II, Seismic I, Components and Structures Related to Safety at the Shoreham Nuclear Plant.

In your response, please identify which documents corres-pond to each request itemized above. If any of the material covered by this request has been destroyed and/or removed, please provide all surrounding documentation, including but not limited to a description of the action (s) taken, rele-vant date(s) and justification (s) for the a c tion (s) ,

i For any documents or portions of documents you deny due to a specific FOIA exemption, please provide an index itemizing and describing the documents or portions of documents withheld.

Pursuant to Vaughn v. Rosen (I), 484 F.2d 280 (D.C. Cir. 1973),

cert. denied, 415 U.S. 977 (1974), the index is equired to provide a fatailed justification of your grounds for claiming each exemption and an explanation of why each exemption is relevant to the document or portion of the document withheld.
