August 14, 2020 The Honorable Jan Schakowsky United States House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative Schakowsky:

On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your July 20, 2020, letter requesting that the NRC extend the public comment period on the proposed interpretive rule on the transfer of very low-level waste to exempt persons for disposal.

The public comment period was originally scheduled to close on April 20, 2020, then extended to July 20, 2020, in response to stakeholder requests. Given the continuing COVID-19 public health emergency and requests from multiple stakeholders, the NRC staff decided to reopen the public comment period between July 30, 2020, and October 21, 2020. A notice of this reopened comment period was published in the Federal Register.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me or have your staff contact Eugene Dacus, Director of the Office of Congressional Affairs, at (301) 415-1776.

Sincerely, Kristine L. Svinicki Kristine L.
