SUBJECT:

NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-440/97011 (DRS)

Dear Mr. Myers:

On July 31,1997, the NRC completed an inspection of the fire protection program at your Perry

reactor facility. At the cor.clusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed with those

members of your staff identified in the enclosed report.

Areas examined during the inspection are identified h the reped Within these areas, the

inspection consisted of selective examinations of r.ocedures and representativo records,

interviews with personnei, and observation of acNities in progress. The purpose of the

inspection was to determine whether activities r Jthorized by the license were conducted safely

and in accordance with NRC requirements.

Overall, the plant staff was knowledgeable of the fire protection program. Control of

combustibles and the material condition of fire protection equipment were good in addition, the

fire protection surveillance and fire brigade training programs were effectively implemented. A

weakness was identified regarding the high number of fire protection impairments requiring a

fire watch.

No violations of NRC requirements were identified during the course of this inspection,

in accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its

enclosures will be placect in the NRC Public Document Room.
