Gamma Source DESCRIPTION:
The 3M Model 4D6S sealed source consists of standard 3M inert ceramic microspheres doubly encapsulated in Type 316L stainless steel.
The inner capsule are closed with a plug and are sealed by TIG welding.
The inner capsule is placed in the outer capsule and than a plug is inserted and TIG welded.
The outer capsule I
measures 0.'34" in diameter by 0.396" in length.

l See Attachment 1.
LABELING:
Sources are engraved with the serial number, isotope, and l
activity.
CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The sealed source are installed in gauging devices made by the I
customer.
The conditions of use the sources are designed to L
withstand are:
Continuous use from 40*F to 200*F and able to Temperature withstand 800'c for at least one hour.
Humidity Continuous use from 0 to 90%.
Continuous use at 1,000 lb/in2 absolute and one Pressure hour at 25,000 lb/in8 absolute.
J Vibration Continuous use in industrial areas and all types of travel.
]
Corrosion
- Austenitic stainless steel are used in 3M sources.
The low carbon content and the high chromium content provide resistance to cracking during welding and corrosion resistance ~after welding.
Austenic steel is resistant to most acids and bases at temperatures below 140*F.

SEALED SOURCE TYPE:
Gamma Source CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE (cont.):
Corrosion cont.- Exceptions are hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and chlorinated atmospheres.
3M sources can withstand continuous use in typical industrial acidic and basic atmospi.eres up to temperatures of 120*F with the exception or the halogen acids.
3M sources are not recommended for use in halogen acid atmospheres.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
3M Model 4D6S was subjected to the prototype tests prescribed in ANSI N542 - 1977.
The sealed sources achieved a classification of 77C66444.
l EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
Radiation dose rates were calculated in mr/hr using dose rates from 3M Model 4D6S, Serial No. T30.
T30 is a 8.5 mci source which is traceable to a NIST standard.
Readings were taken where distance is defined as surface of source to the active center of a Victoreen Model 450P, Sn 350, 3M Instruraent No. 67895.
Readings were at contact and at 30 cm.
The calculated dose rat are for a 500 mci source.
Calculated dose at contact is 76.47 R/hr and 1.588 R/hr at 30 cm.
OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROLL The quality program used to ensure the sealed sources are fabricated to NRC approved design is based on Mil-Q-9858-A guidelines.
The program has been previously accepted for licensing purposes by NRC.
3M is in the process of rewriting their Q.C. Manual which would follow the ISO 9000 guidelines.
ISO 9000 is more stringent than the Mil-Q-9858-A quality system and therefore, is deemed acceptable.

The device shall only be distributed to specific licensees of NRC or an Agreement States.
Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal:
To be determined by the-licensing authority.
In view that these sources exhibit high dose rates, the sources should be handled only by experienced licensed personnel using adequate remote handling equipment and procedures.
The sealed sources shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed 6-months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie of removable contamination.
This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.
SAFETY ANALYSIS
SUMMARY
Based o'.1 review of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing's sealed source Model 4D6S, and the information and test data cited below, we continue to conclude that this sealed source is acceptable for specific licensing purposes.
3M has decided to discontinue the manufacture of these sealed sources.
Furthermore, we continue to conclude that this sealed source would be expected to maintain its containment integrity for normal conditions of use and accidental conditions which might occur during uses specified in this certificate.

Dear Mr. Peters:
Based on the information submitted in your letters dated August 3,
1989, and October 10, 1989, with enclosures thereto, we conclude that Model 4D6S is acceptable for specific licensing purposes.
I It is our understanding that Model 4D6s sealed sources were previously manufactured and distributed and that you no longer slan to manufacture or distribute these sources.
We have completed the review for this source design and have placed it in our Registry of Inactive Sealed Sources and Devices.
We have enclosed a copy of the corrected certificate for your review.
Please read over the registration certificate in its entirety and notify us immediately if there are any errors.
If you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 492-0511 or Steven Baggett at (301) 492-0542.
Sincerely, Sv. b
