SUMMARY

FOR STATUS MEETING WITH U.S.

ENRICHMENT CORPORATION On April 21,1998, the staff from the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, Office of the General Counsel, Region Ill, and Site Facilities and Security met with the U.S.

Enrichment Corporation (USEC), to discuss the status of activities at the gaseous diffusion plants (GDPs). USEC responded to the performance review that was provided at the last meeting and in the Annual Report to Congress. USEC indicated that they felt the report was, in general, accurate, that there were no areas of disagreement, and that there were no surprises. USEC discussed the status of compliance plan issues. The NRC stated that the next quarterly status report should be delayed until the end of July. There are no items due for completion before the next report is due; the month delay will capture the items due at the end of June.

USEC also discussed the status of their chilled environment review USEC expects a response from their contractor in mid May and has seen no significant safety issues to date from the employea survey. USEC discussed the NCS corrective action plan status at the Portsmouth facility NRC and USEC will meet to discuss this topic further in early May, after the quarterly report is issued.

USEC indicated that construction on the seismic modification in building C-310 and C-315 would begin in mid May. The steel work for C-331 and C-335 would begin in early June.

USEC indicated that they had finished their field assessment of the Year 2000 issue.

USEC has a completion date of March 1999 to correct hardware and software issuca resulting from the Year 2000 problem.

The NRC indicated that the letter on the MEU cylinder refeed had been issued and that the amendment on the X-705 Cy!inder Change out for Portsmouth had been signed. The staff and USEC will plan a future meeting to discurs the Chapter 3 update schedule.

The agenda, list of attendees, and USEC handouts are attacheri.
