P.O.
Box 58 Hannuksenkuja 10 H 37 02271 Espoo, Finland
Dear Mr. Komppa:
This refers to you letter dated February 26, 1990 concerning the ability of U.S.
clients simultaneously applying for a license and possessing the Ambertec device containing radioactive material.
M/K Systems application for a license is under review by our Region I Office.
On March 5, 1990 M/K Systems was sent a deficiency letter.
M/K Systems should direct questions concerning the license application to Mr. John Kinneman, Region I and reference control number 111643.
The possession and use of radioactive material in the United States requires a license.
Once a license is issued that authorizes the client to possess the tester, then the radioactive material may be possedby the client.
If you plan to use the Isotope Products Laboratories source no. 352-38, you will need to amend your certificate of registration.
We will need the certification of registration number of the Isotope Products Laboratories source, a copy of the capsule drawing and the isodose curves around the device, if they are different from those already on file with the NRC, before we can initiate an amendment request.
Please note that M/K Systems should notify Region I of their intent to use this alternate source when they respond to the deficiency letter.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
My phone number is (301) 492-0511.

Dear Mr. Baggett,
i.
f-1)
To our knowledge our local representative in the U.S.A.,
M/K Systems Inc.,
has not received the specific license for the AMBERTEC Beta j
i Formation Tester, yet. As their license is crucial for the sales of the tester we are keen to know if there is anything that we could do to assist them in obtaining the license.
I C
2)
In ho:h Finland and Sweden specific licenses are required for the use of g
the said tester. The radiation safe.ty offices, however, have considered the 1 g 4
tiny Pm"7 source in question so harmless that the clients are allowed to take the testers, into use prior to the receival of the license. Please, note 3
p that the users of :he te. ster un a role already do possess similar devices ippe;l with much stronger saurce:. in their mills and laboratories.

EAMBERTECE The operators and supervisors for this kind of a tester are highly skilled, usually having an academic degree. We will provide both written and oral teaching for the radiation safety aspects necessary.
3)
We have received a new type of a Pm"' beta source from Isotope Products laboratories, Burbank, Califorria 915(LI.
The specifications for th: source are as follows :
1 Nominal activity 5 mci H7 Promethium in Carbon matrix Active diameter 0.76 mm Somce No. 352-38 Capsule type DWG #A3883 (r_ot attached)
LA
)bg The source is placed into a cavity at the end of a stainless steel rod,2 mm in diameter, length 10 mm. The dimensions of the source therefore are 7', y identical to the AMERSHAM PHC.32. The only difference is that the
)
active material is scaled into the cavity with a metal foil that is welded on j.
top of the cavity, y
l0 A copy of the data sheet and of the leak test certificate for the source are (av attached.
t+ 9 We assume that the IPL already lias some kind of a NRC license to manufacture this Und cf a sourcc. Could it be possible to amend our license in such a way that these 5 mci sources could be used? In our
.i application the data for a 5 mci source were given but the license states 4 j
mci as the maximum activity (the PHC.32 capsule has not been licensed 1
to 5 mci so far).
I
- }
4)
As we again have the possibility to obtain 5 mci sources, all the European clierts are going to use these ones. We also test and caTibrate the testers for two weeks before the shipment, Icaded with a 5 rnCi source.
O We v ot.ld appreciate your soon reply.
Should ycu require additional informron, please do not hesitate to call us.
