During a February 27,1998 meeting conceming the Prairie Island part length CRDM leak, a request was made that each licensee provide its position on the issue, including plans and schedule for inspections or repairs Farley Units 1 and 2 each have five part length CRDMs. 'Ihe transition welds, both the buttering and the finaljoints, were welded with SB 304 Type ER NI CR3. 'Ihese weld materials are da=igned for the welding ofInconel Alloy 600 to itself, stainless steel, or carbon steel. Inconel welding materials are considered less susceptible to the likely crack mechanism, hot cracking, than 309/308 stainless steel materials which were used on the Prairie Island weldment.
Southern Nuclear plans to visually inspect the accessible part length CRDMs for leakage during the Unit 2 twelfth refueling outage in the Spring of 1998. For Farley Unit 1, a visual exanunation of the

accessible part length CRDMs is tentatively scheduled for the fifteenth refueling outage during the Fall g
i of 1998. 'Ihe inspection plans for Unit I may be revised based on the recommendations of the i
l Westmghouse Owners Group. Until the issue is resolved, Southern Nuclear will pasticipate in NRC
~ and/or Westinghouse Owners Group inspection programs applicable to Farley.
