Dear Mr. Bailey:

l The following is provided for information, and use, as the State deems appropriate.

l

\\

l Recently, the NRC became aware that the user's manual for the CPN model MC-3 Portsprobe gauge directs the user to expose the tip of the source rod, then tip up the moisture dsnsity gauge to visually guide the source rod into the bore hole. The source is exposed when the user performs this step. A copy of a page from the CPN user's manual is enclosed. The illustration at the bottom of that page shows the manufacturer's recommended practice that raised this concern.

l I

l Although calculations performed by NRC staff show that the expected dose to the user for performing this activity is within the exposure limits, for occupational workers, contained in 10 CFR Part 20, we are referring this to you for your consideration.

l

)

If you have any questions, please contact Michele Burgess at (301) 415-5868.

Sincerely, l

ftuy.
