Felix Miera, Program Manager Uranium Licensing Section FROM:.TM Jere Millard, Program Manager Surveillance and Assessment Section DATE:

March 22, 1984

SUBJECT:

Johnny M. Mine Site Reclamation Following a review of reclamation activities conducted at the Johnny M. Mine site by Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation, I feel that a detailed gamma survey should be performed by the Surveillance and Assessment Section. This survey is needed not only to help determine what went wrong, but to establish what natural background levels exist in the area and the possible presence of natural materials enhanced in radioactivity.

From your report it is obvious that the resulting gamma exposure rates are for in excess cf our recommended maximum level of 57 pR/h.

I therefore urge that this license be extended until at least April 30, 1984 to provide the opportunity to determie possible solution (s) to this problem.
