Operating License No. DPR 50 Docket No. 50 289 Appendix R - Fire Zone Fil FZ-5 This letter prosides the response to NRC letter to Gh) Nuclest dated July 11, 1997 (6710-97-3321) regarding actions to restore TMI l fire zone Fil FZ-5 into full compliance with the regulations. GPU Nuclear plans to modify or upgrade the existing Thermo-Lag fire banier envelope in Fil FZ-5 to a 3-hour fire rating in compliance with Appendix R, Section Ill.G.2.a. This modification or upgrade is presently planned to be completed by June 30,1998, which satisfies the previously committ, Thermo.
Lag resolution date of December 31, 1999 for TMI 1.
lixisting compensatory measures will be maintained for fire rone Fil FZ-5 until completion of the fire barrier upgrade or modification to a 3-hour barrier.
