NRC VISIT TO SIEMENS CORPORATION MEDIUM-VOLTAGE CIRCUlT BREAKER FACILITY IN WENDELL, NORTH CAROLINA
Dear Mr. Smith:
This is to confirm the telephone conversation between you, Mr. Ronald Greiner, General Manager of the Siemens Wendell, North Carolina Facility, and Mr. Stephen Alexander of this office on Thursday, April 23,1998, regarding our plans for a visit to the Siemens facility beginning on Monday, April 27,1998. We anticipate the visit being no more that one to three

days. Mr. Alexander will be accompanied by Mr. Kamal Naidu, also of this office.
The purpose of the visit is to obtain further information regarding your notification to the NRC, Wyle Reference No. 45510B-048, dated April 21,1998, of a potential condition reportable under Part 21 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR Part 21). The 10 CFR Part 21 notification described deviations or failures to comply found in basic components (Siemens vacuum circuit breakers converted for use in safety-related GE Magne-Blast switchgear) 4 designed built and supplied to the Arkansas Nuclear One nuclear power plant under your

10 CFR Part 50, Appendix B, quality assurance program. It is our intention to visit the Siemens j
facility to gain an understanding of the equipment and the technical problems that have been experienced with it.
