SUBJECT:
LICENSEE'S JULY 23, 1997, LETTER ON RESULTS OF VNIT 1 CONTROL R0D DROP TESTING PERFORMED ON JUNE 28, 1997, SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT UNIT 1 (TAC N0. M98818)
During my absence from the office on July 30, 1997, the backup Project Manager and the Reactor Systems Branch reviewer had a call with the licensee on the above subject.
The attached questions were faxed to the licensee prior to the phone call to focus the discussion.
Also attached is the licensee's response to Question 5 on the rod drop traces for all rod drops during Cycle 7 for location D8.
As a result of the call, the licensee-determined that there were minor errors in the shutdown margin calculations, however, they expected that these errors would not change the results.
The licensee _ stated-that they would inform the staff of the results.

Questions for HPL on STP 1 -
Data on C5 in July 23,1997 submittal is different from what we previously receivW. Please explain.
., Page 2 of 4, under Analysis,3rd paragraph. For each case what is the location of the highest worth rod? For cases 2 and 3, which locations are the bounding locations?
Has a calculation been done with both C7 and Cg stud fut out? ff so what are the results?
Have drag tests been done on the STP2 Cycle 5 fuel and what are the results?
Please provide the rod drop traces for all drops during Cycle 7 for location D8.
After the January test, there was discussion that part of the distortion may be from the fuel
' copying" deformation of its closest neighbors. Please provide further discussion on this especially with regard to the core area where all of the incomplete insertions and zero recoil have occurred.
What are the results of the Westinghouse mechanical model predictions for the trips and tests for STP1 cycle 6, STP2 Cycle 5 and STP1 Cycle 77 ATTACHMENT 1
