se,ctions.. The total energy absorbed by the impact limiter at a particular increment is the sum of
'd all of the incremental energies up to that point. The iterations continue until all of the kinetic l energy of the cask is absorbed by the impact limiter (s). The lower impact limiter absorbs all of l the kinetic energy for an end (vertical) drop and a center-of gravity-over comer (comer) drop. In a side (horizontal) drop, each of the two impact limiters absorbs half of the kinetic energy. The energy absorbed by the lawer impact limiter varies between a corner drop and a side drop and is determined by using conservation of angular momentum. The remainder of the cask's kinetic energy plus the additional energy gained by the cask rotation to horizontal is distributed between the upper and the lower impact limiters taking into account parabolic distribution along the cask axis. The analysis has been performed to demonstrate that the slapdown is always bounded by the horizontal drop condition.
The total force exerted by the impact limiter on the cask is sum of the forces in all of the column sections. The maximum deceleration of the cask is the maximum force divided by the mass of the package (including the mass of the impact limiters).
2.10.3.3 Analysis Results The impact limiters are analyzed for the TranStorm shipping cask for drops of I foot and 30 feet. For the 1-foot drop, the drop orientations analyzed are the end, comer, and side drop. To the 30 foot drop, the drop orientations analyzed are the end, corner, side, and an oblique drop at O
60 degrees from the vertical. The cold and hot properties of honeycomb are adjusted by dynamic
> b and statistical variability factors and used for each of the above analyses. The results of the drop analyses are summarized in Table 2.10.3-1.
Since the TranStor* system components are analyzed statically, a load increase factor is included to account for the dynamic response of component to a load impulse. The DLFs are determined based on the methodology of Reference 2.7 and are a function of the load duration relative to natural frequencies of the dynamic system. Therefore, the frequencies of the critical cask components as well as the impact duration for I foot and 30 foot drops are calculated. The highest corresponding DLFs are applied to accelerations obtained from the impact limiter analysis and the ensuing loads are used in the component evaluation. Table 2.10.3-2 presents the results of this analysis.
