NRC PERRY FIRE PROTECTION FOLLOW UP INSPECTION REPORT

50-440/98005(DRS)

Dear Mr. Myers.

On April 8,1998, the NRC completed a follow up inspection of the fire protection program at

f

your Perry Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1. At the conclusion of the inspection, the findings were

discussed with those members of your staff identified in the enclosed report.

Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. Within these areas, the

inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative records,

interviews with personnel, and observation of activities in progress. The purpose of this

inspet. tion was to evaluate the performance of the fire protection program with respect to

j

engine tring evaluations on discrepant fire barriers and fire protection systems and to dete.Tnine

]

whethe activities authorized by the license were conducted safely and in accordance wit's NRC

]

requirements.

Overall, the plant staff was knowledgeable of the fire protection program. A weakness was

)

identified regarding the coefficient of friction (C factor) ched in the hydraulic calculation for t'ie

sprinkler system. In addition, one unresolved item was identified concerning engineering

assumptions used in evaluating as-built configurations of discrepant penetration seals.

Based on the results of this inspection, no violations of NRC requirements were identified.
