NRC INSPECTION REPORT 70-7001/98004(DFS)

Dear Mr. Miller:

This letter refers to the inspection conducted on February 23-27,1998, at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The inspection was categorized as a " reactive" inspectica because its primary purpose was to follow-up on the May 5-9,1997, security inspection findings at Paducah that resulted in escalated enforcoment. The inspection also included a review of the approved Paducah Security Plan for the Protect;on of Classified Matter and Physical Security Plan. At the conclusion of this inspection, the findings were discussed with members of your staff as identified in the enclosed report. The er Josed report presents the results of this inspection.

Areas oxamined during the inspectior Me identified in the report. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of interviews with personnel, observations of activities in progress, walk-throughs with your staff, and selected examination of procedures and associated records.

Based on the results of this inspection, the NRC has determined that all findings from the May 5-9,1997 secur;ty inspection have been properly addressed and closed or are in the process of being closed via the United States Enrichment Corporation's " Request for Application Change" procedure.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
