8 Dr. George !!. Matous - Radiation Protection of ficer.
Six years of on the job training at the University of !!otre Dame, as a graduate student in !!uclear Physics. This also included several courses in atonic and nuclear physics which provided inforuation of the type requested in item 8 (a thru d).
Two years of on the job training at the U.S. !!aval Research Laboratory as a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the Nucleonics Division. Four years of on the job training at I!aly Cross College as Assistant Professor of Physics. Four years of on the job traininS at Indiana University of Pennsylvania as Associate Professor of Physics. Three years of on the job training as Radiation Protection Officer at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. During these 19 years, Dr. !!atous has taken, as well as taught, many courses which included material of the type listed in item 8 (a thru d).
lie has also performed and directed many experiments involving radiation both from isotopic sources and accelerators. The sources included 96 grams encapsulated as Pu - Be neutron sources, as well as a wide variety of alpha, beta and gamma sources.
9.
Physica staff members have completed graduate degrees uhich included courses as well as experience handling various amounts of radioactive materials. Other University staff members desiring to use the sources n
vill be required to cooplete a progran involving the safe handling of equipoent _as well as radiation sources in general.
10.
Instrumentation now available for use when appropriate include 1 Victoreen PIP 400 Channel pulse height analyzer; Nuclear Data - Model 2200 Pulse lleight Analyzer; 1 Nucleonic !!odel 20306 Scaler-rate meter; 1 !!uclear-Chicago rate meter; 1 Huclear Chicago llodel 181B scaler; 1 Nuclear Chicago Mode'l 1810 Radiation Analyzer; 1 Iluelear Chicago Model M-5 gas flow apparatus; 1 Iluclear-Chicago !!odel DSS Scintillation Detector; one (1) Victorcen !!odel 440 Low Energy Gamma-survey Meter; three (3)
Portable Alpha Beta Gamma Survey Meters - Nuclear Chicago !!odel 2650.
11.
Victorcen Model 440 Low Energy Survey Meter and the Nuclear Chicago Model 2650 general survey meter are routinely checked using a Ra 226 source supplied as a calibration source for the 2650 meter. The instru-ments are cross-calibrated using the same source with as identical con; dicions as possible. The' source provided, Ra 226, allows the !!uclear Chicago 2650 to be calibrated on both high and low ranges. The Victoreen Model 440 can thus be cross-calibrated on all ranges to the Nuclear Chicago 2650 relatively easily. This is done periodically using various strength radiation fields from our 2 meV Van de Graaff accelerator.

Radioactive natcrial to under the supervision of the Radiation Protection Officer.: Uhen not in use it is stored in a-shielded room behind his office. Access to this room is only through the Radiation i
Protection office. Radioactive material is assigned to a staff member only after an " application for Safety Authorization" is completed and Posted.- (See attached sheet) 14 The receiving clerk of the University is instructed to bring all packages containing radioactive material to the Radiation Safety Officer.
The order and invoice are then checked to insure that they natch and to determine what type of naterial it is. (Isotope, physical form, strength, etc.) The Radiation Safety Officer then checks the package for damage-and possible Icakage. This is done visually and with the Victoreen Model 440 Low Energy survey meter and/or a 11uclear Chicago Model 2652 survey meter.
If the naterial is in liquid form the package is opened while sitting in a secondary pan so that any spill would be contained.
If any indication of breakage or leakage exists, the package is set in a pan and opened under a hood. All packing material is checked for contamination before discarding.
If everything 1s normal, the material is then delivered to the person responsible for it.
