' RE: Public Meetsg: Shipoents of Spent Nuclear Fuel Rods to GE Vallecitos Nuclear Center

Dear Mr. MerschotT:

I am writing to follow up on my earlier letter requesting a Public Meeting to hear from County health -

officials and residents about the plan to ship spent nuclear fuel rods through Alameda County to the GE Vallecitos Nuclear Center near Pleasanton. Linda Howe of the NRC contacted our office and said that a meeting is being tentatively scheduled for October 20. I appreciated her quick response and willingness to l-arrange a meeting. Ms. Howe said the meeting would focus on safety precautions that will be taken in shipping the radioactive rods on the freeways. I understand that the shipment will occur sometime in 1 November.

Could you let me know how much time will be allowed for public comment, how much time County health 1

officials have to present their concems and how the other issues described below will be addressed? I am i

requesting that the agenda include current and planned safety precautions, potential risks involved the

{

- volume of radioactive material stored currently and planned for the future at the site. As importantly, I would like to examine alternatives to generating and shipping radioactive materials to Alameda County.

- I am concerned about the public and environmental health impact of the rods should they be mishandled nr in case of an accident. He earthquakes in Taiwan and Turkey illustrate the kind of damage a major qual

' on the Hayward Fault could cause to the storage facility. With more than 6 million people living in the J Bay Area and over 1.3 million in Alameda County, even the most minor mishap could have disastrous j

. health and environmental consequences.

. My office stands ready to assist with the public meeting, as do the Alameda County Public Health Department staff. Please contact me at 510-272-6693 at vour earliert convenience.' nack you for your l'

prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
