NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT 50-309/97-07
Dear Mr. Sellman:
On September 7, ?997, the NRC completed an inspection at your Maine Yankee reactor
.
-f acility. The results of that inspection were discussed with Mr. R. Blackmore and others of
your staff at an exit meeting held on September 16,1997. The enclosed report presents
the results of that inspection.
During' the 7 week period covered by this inspection, your conduct of activities at the
Maine Yankee facility was safety focused. We acknowledge the decision to decommission
the facility and recognize the resultant shift in priorities at the site. However, we observed

a case where a temporary change was made without proper evaluation. The discovery of
temporary fans in the protected switchgear room during this period indicate that corrective
actions taken for previous violations have not been fully effective. Your continued strong
management attention to site activities is warranted.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter
and its enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room. No response is
- required to this report.
