Sewage Survey POTW Guidance Document Summary:

Sewage Survey

-Tony Huffert suggested that in some cases it may l;e desirable to have a 14-or 30- day composite sample taken at the POTW.

This will be considered on a case-by-case basis during the first few months of sample analysis.

Tony noted that the Albuquerque POTW will be sampled in various locations to assess the representati"eness of samples at POTWs.

Tony also suggested taking ar.

influent samp:e in some cases, but this was judged to be beyond the scope of this survey.

The subccmmittee agreed to delete survey objective #4 (support the basis for developing acceptance criteria for radioactivity in sludge and ash) because dose modeling, not the survey results. will be used to establish acceptance criteria.

Mary Wisdom is revising the Quality Assurance Project Plan (OAPP) to address the comments in the July 24 conference call and inputs received since then.

The subcommittee made several minor changes in the Questionnaire, which is now ready.for OMB review, NAREL and ORISE have revised the letter report on the analysis of samplet frogi -

the test sites to reflect NRC's comments.

EPA will send their comments on the report to the labs in the next week so the labs can produce the next draft by September 15.

Bob Neel will review the list of radionuclides in the report to determine if any of the radionuclides listed in the guidance document are missing from the lab report.

Phyllis Sobel distributed copies of the draft summary re) ort on the survey design and results of the test sites.

This report will )e updated after the next draft of the labs letter report.

She also distributed the latest version of the OMB Supporting Statement.

The subcommittee plans to distribute the draft version at the next ISCORS meeting, so the ISCORS members can comment before it is submitted to the Federal Regisigt.

POTW Guidance Document Tony Huffert is developing scenarios to Le 'ted in dose modeling.

R has contacted staff at the Oak Ridge POTW A'buquerque POTW, and Sandia National Laboratory to discuss their dose modeling.

Loren Setlow and Tony will meet with EPA's risk assessment group to determine the appropriate code to use in dose modeling.

EPA plans to place the guidance on EPA's home page in the next few months so it will be available over the Internet. ~ At the September 1B ISCORS meeting, the subcommittee will ask ISCORS if they have any comments on the guidance document.

Bob Bastian will also ask industry to comment on the guidance document by October.

The next subcommittee meeting will be held in late September or early October.

At this meeting we will discuss the summary report on the test sites and dose modeling. Jim Bachmaier will review the FDA report on radioactive contamination of human food to see if it is applicable to modeling sewage scenarios.

Action Items:

1, Mary Wisdom will send out the next draft of the 0 APP during the second week in September.

2.

Phyllis Sobel will contact Mark Doehnert to discuss his suggestions for changes in the sample collection procedures.

A lab working group phone call will be arranged, if necessary.

3.

Loren Setlow will send EPA's comments on the draft labs letter report to Saunders and Condra by August 29.

Then the labs will revise the report and send a second draft to Bastian and Sobel by September 15.

4.

The subcommittee will send Phyllis Sobel any comments on the revised OMB Supporting Statement by September 2.

5.

Bob Neel will review the list of radionuclides in the labs report by

3-r, August 29 and send his analysis to Saunders and Condra.

' 6.

Bob Bastian and Phyllis Sobel will contact their respective OGC offices to determine how to retain confidentiality of POTW codes for potential FOIA requests.

7.

8.

Bob Bastian Loren Setlow and Phyllis Sobel will meet the afternoon of September 16 to prepare for the ISCORS meeting.
